"Eight Tips to Boost Your Productivity"
by Gary Lockwood
Most people become frustrated with days that aren't as productive
as originally intended. Put simply, we would prefer to get more
done.
In today's fast-paced, highly competitive marketplace, CEOs,
business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals are
expected to do more things, go more places and make more
decisions. Here are eight ideas on how to outwit the common
timewasters that eat away at your productivity.
* Telephone Tag: A huge time waster -- should you leave a
message, or hold when calling. Statistically, it is better to hold
up to one minute. Of course, it helps to have something else to
do, like filing, doing your expenses, or reading while you wait.
Hands free or speaker phones are a great idea. Read while you
hold. Five minutes per day = 2.5 reading days per year.
* Plan Your Day: Wake up to a purpose, not an alarm. Have you
noticed that successful people always seem to have a lot of
energy and time to do so many things? Their sense of purpose
comes in part from planning their day the night before.
You can do the same. Write down what you will accomplish the
next day. Focus on what must be done and write them down in
their priority order. Follow that list the next day and as each
priority is finished you'll have a sense of accomplishment.
* Clean Your Desk: A messy desk is a serious problem for people
in two ways. The first is the time spent looking for things. Surveys
showed that the average person spends over three hours each
week just trying to locate something on the desk or in the files.
The second problem is the distraction caused by objects nearby,
too often interrupting your concentration on one task and causing
you to change your priorities.
So clean off your desk!
* Delegation: Every one of us can multiply our effectiveness by
delegating to others. This is essential to leveraging your time,
and helps others grow in their own skills and confidence.
It's difficult to delegate when you feel we can do a task better
than someone else. If you resist delegating, you inhibit your
own productivity, and the growth of others. Many failed
businesses trace part of their failure to poor delegation.
* Placing Calls: "Pay me now or pay me later", is a common
phrase that applies to many outgoing phone calls. The time
spent planning a call in advance is an excellent way to make
efficient use of the call, and make sure that all important points
are covered.
Remember to list the items based on importance and record
the response on a permanent communication log for each person.
* Self-Appointments: Make appointments with yourself! Do this
when you need time to concentrate on an important project, time
to catch up on accumulated mail, or following a vacation or
business trip. Schedule this time on your calendar, and you'll
find that you are more focused and more efficient.
* Wasting Your Precious Time: Self-employed people often waste
precious time by doing everything themselves such as typing
invoices, packing orders, emptying wastebaskets and filing.
Your business will grow faster and more successful if you con-
centrate your time on important work and minimize time spent
on trivial tasks.
Try hiring a part-time person to do these things. Maybe someone
in the neighborhood who would like to work 10-20 hours a week,
close to home. Ask the local high school or college if they have
an intern program that fits your needs. To keep your business
thriving, find ways to spend your time on the important things.
* Count Your Successes: At the end of the day, take a few minutes
to reflect on what you've accomplished, and write down at least
three items you consider successes. In a world where we get
many negative messages, we need to give ourselves some
positive ones too. Remember, sometimes it feels like you're
losing if you don't keep score!

of the Day by Ted Goff. http://www.bizsuccess.com/cartoon.htm
-------------
THINGS I WISH I'D KNOWN BEFORE I WENT OUT IN THE REAL WORLD
1. Any and all compliments can be handled by simply saying "Why,
thank you" (though it helps if you say it with a Southern accent).
2. Some people are working backstage, some are playing in the
orchestra, some are on stage singing, some are in the audience as
critics and some are there to applaud. Know who and where you are.
3. Never give yourself a haircut after three margaritas.
4. When baking, follow directions. When cooking, go by your own
taste.
5. Never continue dating anyone who is rude to the waiter and doesn't
like dogs/cats.
6. Good sex should involve laughter. Because think about it, it is
funny.
7. You need only two tools. WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't
move
and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.
8. The five most essential words for a healthy, vital relationship:
"I apologize" and "You are right".
9. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
10. When you make a mistake, make amends immediately.
It's easier to eat crow while it's still warm.
11. The only really good advice that I remember my mother ever gave
me was "Go! You might meet somebody!"
12. If he/she says that you are too good for him/her--believe it.
13. I've learned to pick my battles; I ask myself, Will this matter one
year from now? How about one month? One week? One day?
14. Never pass up an opportunity to pee.
15. If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You have another
chance!
16. Living well really is the best revenge. Being miserable because
of
a bad or former relationship just might mean that the other person was
right about you.
17. Knowing how to listen to music is as great a talent as knowing how
to make it.
18. Work is good but it's not that important.
19. Never underestimate the kindness of your fellow man.
20. And finally...Be really nice to your friends. You never know when
you are going to need them to empty your bedpan.
