Hello. Gary Lockwood here. Many of you spend a great deal of time
traveling as part of your professional life. Whether you're a road
warrior or an occasional traveler, increasing your productivity on
the road will improve your results. In this issue, we look at a few
tips for increasing productivity while traveling.
My hope is that you use the ideas in these broadcasts to get
the results you really want. If you want some help in putting
them into practice, or if you have questions, email or call me.

Productivity While Traveling
It seems like successful entrepreneurs and professionals are
constantly traveling from one place to the next. While it is difficult
to maintain peak productivity while subjecting yourself to the rigors
of modern travel, here are a few pointers that will help:
*** Develop a Travel System:
Develop and use a single system for appointments, to-do’s, and
communication tracking that can travel with you. This keeps you
functional when you’re away from the office. A 3-ring binder can
hold your calendar, a 30-day to-do list, and A to Z tabs to file your
communication notes. It’s like having your desk with you when
you’re away from the office and permits you to function efficiently
while you travel.
*** Travel and Technology:
Use modern tools to help your efficiency and productivity while
traveling. Phones are available in planes as well as cars -- and
cellular phones can fit in your pocket or briefcase. Notebook and
palm size computers are finally inexpensive and capable enough
to make them very effective. Pocket dictating machines make it
easy to write memos on a plane or in your hotel room. Voice mail
and electronic mail gives you access to key people 24 hours a day.
Improve your travel time with the technologies available to help out.
*** Communication Tool:
We often have trouble remembering the details of previous conver-
sations with others. We use our memories, scraps of paper, notes
on calendars, and other means to remember details. Once in a
while, some things fall through the cracks. The solution is to use a
3-ring notebook with A to Z tabs. Develop a communications sheet
for each of your key contacts, filed alphabetically, to record your
notes
of each interaction. Write down who said what, promises made, key
followup actions, and so on. This technique is best for keeping track
of details and to plan calls, meetings, and projects in advance.
*** Work On a Plane:
Use your time on a plane effectively, especially on long trips. This
time can be surprisingly private and is an excellent way to focus
without interruptions. Use this time to catch up on your reading --
it’s easier if you have clipped articles of interest in advance and
placed them in your briefcase. You can also do expense reports,
write or dictate memos, trip reports, or do some much needed
project planning. The key is to use this time effectively, especially
before the meal is served. Then relax and enjoy your flight after
your meal.
