     7 Sure-Fire Ways to Beat Your Competition

1) Know Your Competitors

The first step in keeping up (and staying ahead) of your competition
is
to know who they are. Athletes study their opponents to find
weaknesses
and discover ways to counter their strong points. You too must know
who
you’re up against and how they operate. Gathering knowledge and
applying
it to improve your business will give you a major advantage over your
competitors.

So how do you find them? One way is to search the advertising mediums
they’re likely to use. And since you’re already marketing to the same
target audience, this should be fairly easy to do. You can also use
the
search engines to find their websites. But doing a complete search
with
the top 10 search engines can be time consuming. To make your searches
more productive, I recommend using a software program called WebFerret
by FerretSoft. This neat little program will simultaneously search 10
of the
top search engines for the keywords you enter. It’s an efficient way
to find
your competitors online. You can get it for free at ferretsoft.com.

2) Become One of Their Customers

Once you know who your competitors are, you’ll want to become a
customer. I’m not saying that you must buy all their products. But it
would be worth the effort to respond to their ads, and make a few
purchases to see how they do business. It’s just not enough to view
their business from the surface, like browsing their website. The
deeper
you dig, the more valuable information you’ll find – information you
can
use to improve your business and capture more of the market.

3) Be a Little Bit Better

When you know how your competitors operate, you’re in a position of
power. Use your new-found knowledge to out-perform them in one or
two (or more) areas. For instance, you could offer a longer guarantee
period, quicker product fulfillment, more reasonable payment options
(a very powerful method), or provide more value per dollar. And you
don’t have to go to extremes. All it takes is to be a little bit
better.

4) Exceed Your Customer’s Expectations

You’ve probably heard this one many times. But it’s vital to your
success.
The idea is to promise your customers more than they expect. Then
impress the heck out of them by over-delivering on your initial
promise.
When you treat your customers this way, they’ll continue to do
business
with you. And they’ll be less likely to split for one of your
competitors.

Obtaining a new customer is the hardest part of doing business. So
when
you get one, hang on to her by treating her like royalty. This simple
approach to customer service will bring you plenty of testimonials,
referrals, and repeat business for many years.

5) Grab Hot Opportunities Quickly

Today, more than ever, the business world is rapidly evolving.
Especially
on the Internet. What works today may not work a month from now. And
you have an obligation to your business and your customers to stay on
the cutting edge. This doesn’t mean that you should jump on every
opportunity that comes your way. But you do need to stay aware of
legitimate, worthwhile opportunities to become more efficient, more
productive, increase cash-flow, and better serve your customers.

6) Leverage Your #1 Asset

What can your business offer that stands above everything else? What’s
the one thing that separates you from your competition? This is your
Unique Selling Proposition (or USP). Your USP shows what you do
better (or how you are different) than the rest. Leverage this
advantage
against your competitors by making it a prominent part of all your
marketing efforts -- a sure fire way to attract more prospects and
customers.

7) Protect Your Image

This is crucial, especially for the long-term reputation of your
business.
If you want to last, you must stand for quality and ethics in
everything
you do. You can’t afford to use questionable practices or compromise
the quality of your products or services. As my father used to tell
me,
“Do it right, or don’t do it at all.”
