Remember Where You Live
When I was a youngster, there was a TV show titled: "I Led
Three Lives". Today, in an increasing number of American,
no, make that world wide, homes, there is a real life show
that could be titled: "I Am Living 2 Lives".
It appears this thing loosely called the net, has spawned
dual personalities in what otherwise would be normal people.
And, to boot, it seems so consuming, most people are not
aware they have become afflicted.
What is this cyber space threat to otherwise normal human
beings? Because it lacks an official medical name assigned
by some medical guru, I have taken the liberty of naming it.
I call it netophrenia. Remember, I am not a medical type of
any sort so netophrenia bears no clinical relation to
schizophrenia.
Ok, now that it has a name, what are the symptoms? This
netophrenia enters the body, most of the time invited, and
grows two personalities. One who lives on the web and one
who lives off line. And, the one who lives on the net
reluctantly, if at all, takes notice of the off line personality.
On the other hand, the off line personality longs to be, to the
point of exclusivity, on line.
How can I say this with certainty? This article wasn't supposed
to be a true confession article but, the fact is, I am afflicted.
Listen to the words of my loving, caring wife and decide if you
fit the description. If you do, guess what...
Last week I was immersed in cyber space when my lovely bride
tapped me on the shoulder and said, "Hey dummy, do you
remember where you live? Look out the front and back
windows. If the grass gets any taller, you'll need a permit from
the EPA and a chain saw to cut it.
Friday is still trash day in this neighborhood, the rear brakes on
the Volvo squeak and mark next Tuesday, 2:45 on your calendar
so you can make an appearance with your son at his parent-
teacher's meeting. Seems he did a naughty and they want to
discuss it with you."
My esoteric connection was shattered by reality. At that point,
on line personality was overwhelmed by off line personality.
In this case, wifemate. Thank goodness gracious for the
wake up call.
I had experienced this similar phenomenon years ago when I
became a stock broker. I immersed myself into that profession
up to eighteen hours a day. Made great money but missed
several years of babies becoming youngsters, spouse changing
and adapting to new roles while attempting to maintain existing roles.
I swore it would never happen again. I would always have
balance between family and outside activity. I almost kept
that promise. However, the net proved too much and with an
affliction, it was easy to give up control. I had an excuse,
a crutch.
I tell you these things because I completely understand, and
have written, that an entrepreneur has to be focused,
totally committed and maintain a totally positive attitude.
In fact, a positive attitude should be standard issue at
birth. Motivation goes without saying as does staying up
late putting in extra hours.
As I mentioned, I applied this formula and was very
successful. Fortunately for me when I went to cash my
reality check, my wife was there to cash it. And, she did it
again. I wonder though, how many times is she willing to be
the cashier?
I am in no way saying put the desire to be a successful
netrepreneur on hold or in the closet. I'm saying to look at
your whole world and incorporate every factor affecting your
netpreneurship into your plan. Or, as so succinctly asked,
"Do you remember where you live?"
Remembering where you live has side benefits too. It
relieves stress, dissatisfaction, overcomes challenges and
crushes obstacles. Think of it in terms of the new truth in
advertising we are now hearing for over the counter drugs.
The television personality announcer now tells you about the
harmful side effects. Not so long ago, they extolled only
the virtues.
Netophrenia has harmful side effects but if taken according
to directions, it can be controlled.
Good luck in your efforts and may you always remember where
you live.
